How Schools and Universities Register a .edu.bd Domain
EIIN or UGC approval? Which institutions qualify for .edu.bd, how it differs from .sch.bd, and the exact registration process for schools and universities.
An educational institution's domain does a job that a business domain doesn't: it authenticates. When a parent receives an email about admissions, or a student downloads a result sheet, the address itself is evidence that the message came from the real institution rather than an impersonator.
That's why .edu.bd is restricted, and why the registration process asks for institutional credentials rather than a trade licence. Here's how it works.
Who is eligible
.edu.bd is reserved for recognised educational institutions in Bangladesh. In practice that means:
| Institution type | Verifies with |
|---|---|
| Primary and secondary schools | EIIN certificate |
| Colleges | EIIN certificate |
| Madrasahs | EIIN certificate |
| Technical and vocational institutes | EIIN or relevant board recognition |
| Public and private universities | UGC approval |
You'll also submit the NID of the head of institution or an authorised contact — the person acting on the institution's behalf.
Coaching centres and training businesses
A coaching centre, private tutoring service, or commercial training company generally will not qualify for .edu.bd, because the rule looks for a recognised institution rather than an education-adjacent business. Register .com.bd with your trade licence, or the direct .bd namespace, instead.
.edu.bd vs .sch.bd
Both exist, and schools can often qualify for either:
.edu.bd | .sch.bd | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | All education levels | Schools specifically |
| Registration | ৳805 | ৳1,265 |
| Renewal | ৳1,173 | ৳1,840 |
| Recognition | Widely understood | Less common |
For most schools, .edu.bd is the better choice: it's cheaper in year one and instantly legible to parents, who read "edu" as an educational institution without needing to think about it. .sch.bd makes sense mainly if your preferred name is already taken on .edu.bd.
Choosing the name
Institutional domains have a different naming logic from commercial ones. A few principles that hold up over decades:
- Use the institution's actual name, not a marketing phrase. Parents search for the school by name.
- Include a location where the name is generic. "Ideal School" exists in many districts;
idealschoolctg.edu.bddisambiguates. - Avoid the founding year unless it's genuinely part of the institution's identity.
- Keep it typable by a parent on a phone. Long acronym strings are harder to relay over the phone than a plain name.
- Don't encode the current principal or a specific programme — the domain will outlast both.
The registration process
- Search the name. Use the domain search to check availability across
.edu.bdand.sch.bd. - Gather documents. Scan the EIIN certificate (or UGC approval) and the authorised contact's NID.
- Register and pay. Use an institutional email address for the account, not a personal one — staff change, institutions don't.
- Upload within three days. Unverified domains are suspended after that window.
- Verification. Typically 24–72 hours on business days.
Key takeaway
Register the account to a role address the institution controls — something like ict@yourschool.edu.bd or an existing office address — never a teacher's personal Gmail. Institutional domains are routinely lost when the one person who held the account leaves.
What to do with it once you have it
The domain is worth more than the website sitting on it. Three things to set up early:
Staff email addresses
Move official correspondence off personal accounts. admissions@yourschool.edu.bd is verifiable in a way that yourschooladmission@gmail.com is not — and that matters when fee-related fraud is a live risk. See setting up professional email, and pay particular attention to the SPF, DKIM and DMARC section: those records are what stop someone impersonating your institution.
A notice and results channel
Even a simple page for notices, routines and results is more reliable than a Facebook post that disappears down the feed within hours.
Subdomains for departments
Rather than separate domains, use subdomains: library.yourschool.edu.bd, results.yourschool.edu.bd. One registration, one renewal, unlimited structure — the mechanics are in the DNS setup guide.
Long-term custody
Institutional domains fail in a predictable way: the ICT teacher who registered it leaves, the renewal reminder goes to an address nobody reads, and the domain lapses. Guard against it:
- Keep the account email on an address the institution owns and monitors.
- Record the expiry date in the office calendar, not just one person's inbox.
- Renew multi-year —
.edu.bdallows up to 10 years. - Keep a copy of the account credentials with the administration, not only with the IT staff member.
