How to Renew a .bd Domain Before It Expires

When to renew, what it costs, what the grace period actually protects, and how to recover a .bd domain that has already lapsed.

A domain renewal is the least interesting thing you'll do all year, right up until you forget one. Then it becomes the most interesting thing, because your website and email stop working within minutes of expiry.

This guide covers when to renew a .bd domain, what it costs, what the grace period actually protects you from, and what to do if you're reading this because a domain has already lapsed.

When to renew

The short answer: at least 30 days before expiry.

That buffer isn't paranoia. It absorbs the three things that realistically go wrong:

  • A payment that doesn't clear on the first attempt.
  • A card that expired since last year, or a bKash account that needs topping up.
  • Document details that need re-confirming with BTCL — a trade licence that has since been renewed under a slightly different name, for instance.

None of those take long individually. All of them take longer than the zero days you have left if you renew on the expiry date.

Key takeaway

Expiry is not a warning shot. A .bd domain stops resolving on its expiry date, which means your site returns an error and your email bounces — immediately, not gradually.

What renewal costs

Renewal is charged at BTCL's standard rate, which for most extensions is higher than the first-year registration rate:

ExtensionFirst yearRenewal (per year)
.com.bd / .net.bd / .org.bd৳805৳1,173
.bd৳1,472৳1,840
.বাংলা৳460৳460
.ai.bd৳4,600৳5,750
.tv.bd৳13,800৳17,250

This surprises a lot of people in year two. It's the registry's own pricing structure, not a reseller markup — the full explanation is in our .bd domain price breakdown. Live rates are always on the pricing page.

How to renew, step by step

  1. Sign in to the get.bd client area.
  2. Open Domains and find the domain approaching expiry.
  3. Choose Renew and select a period — up to 10 years for most extensions, up to 4 for the direct .bd namespace.
  4. Pay with bKash, Nagad, bank transfer or card.
  5. Confirm the new expiry date shows correctly on the domain record.

That last step matters. Don't assume a payment went through because you started it — check that the expiry date actually moved.

Renew long, forget safely

If the domain is core to your business, renew for the maximum period you can. A 10-year .com.bd renewal removes nine future opportunities to forget, and locks in today's rate against BTCL's next revision.

What happens after expiry

The sequence is roughly:

  1. Expiry date. The domain stops resolving. Website down, email bouncing.
  2. Grace period. The registration is still recoverable and you can renew at the normal rate. This window is set by BTCL and is not indefinite.
  3. Release. Once the grace period ends, the name can be released back to the available pool — at which point anyone eligible can register it.

Do not gamble on the grace period

The grace period is a safety net for administrative slips, not a free extension. During it your site is already offline, and once it closes you may lose the name permanently to someone else. Treat expiry as the deadline, not the start of one.

There's more detail on what happens at each stage in what happens when a .bd domain expires.

If your domain has already expired

Act today, in this order:

  1. Sign in and attempt the renewal immediately — if you're inside the grace period it will simply go through.
  2. If renewal isn't offered, contact support straight away with your domain name and account details. The sooner it reaches BTCL, the better the odds.
  3. Have your verification documents ready; a lapsed domain often needs them re-confirmed.
  4. Once restored, immediately renew for several years so it can't recur.

Preventing the next one

  • Use a monitored email address for your domain account — not a personal address that someone might leave the company with.
  • Put the expiry date in a shared calendar, with a reminder 60 days out.
  • Keep payment details current in the client area.
  • Renew multi-year for anything business-critical.

One deliberate note: don't point your domain's account email at an address hosted on that same domain. If the domain expires, the reminder emails bounce — and you'll never see the warning that would have saved you. Use a separate address entirely.

Frequently asked questions

When should I renew my .bd domain?
At least 30 days before the expiry date. That leaves room for payment delays and any document re-verification without risking an outage.
How much does .bd renewal cost?
Renewal uses BTCL's standard rate, which is higher than the first-year rate for most extensions — ৳1,173 for .com.bd, .net.bd and .org.bd, ৳1,840 for the direct .bd namespace. .বাংলা renews at ৳460, the same as registration.
What happens if my .bd domain expires?
It stops resolving immediately — your website and email go down. There is a grace period during which you can renew at the normal rate, after which the domain can be released and become available to others.
Can I renew for multiple years at once?
Yes. Most .bd extensions allow up to 10 years; the direct .bd namespace allows up to 4 years at a time. Multi-year renewal locks in today's rate.
Will I get a reminder before expiry?
Yes. get.bd sends renewal reminders by email ahead of the expiry date, but you should still note the date yourself — reminders can land in spam.
