Trade Licence Requirements for a .com.bd Domain

Why .com.bd requires a trade licence, exactly what we check on it, and what your options are if yours is expired, pending, or does not exist yet.

Of all the reasons a .com.bd registration gets rejected, one accounts for most of them: the applicant submitted a National ID when BTCL wanted a trade licence.

This guide explains why that requirement exists, exactly what gets checked, and — if you don't have a licence — which extension to register instead.

Why .com.bd requires a trade licence

.com.bd is the commercial namespace within Bangladesh's country-code domain. The "com" part isn't decorative: BTCL treats it as reserved for entities doing business, and a trade licence is the standard proof that an entity is registered to trade in Bangladesh.

That restriction is what gives the extension its credibility. A customer seeing a .com.bd address knows there's a licensed business behind it — which is precisely the trust signal you're buying.

Key takeaway

A National ID proves you are a person. A trade licence proves you are a business. .com.bd is a business namespace, so it needs the second document — and for a company registration, usually both.

What BTCL actually checks

When your licence is reviewed, four things matter:

  1. Validity. The licence must be current, not expired.
  2. Name match. The entity name on the licence should match the registrant name you entered during registration.
  3. Legibility. The full document must be readable — all four edges visible, no glare, no cropped corners.
  4. Issuing authority. A licence from the relevant city corporation, municipality, or union parishad.

You'll normally also submit the NID of the authorised contact person — the individual acting on the business's behalf.

Getting the name match right

This is where most avoidable rejections come from. Enter the registrant name exactly as it appears on the licence:

Licence saysRegister asNot as
Rahman TradersRahman TradersRahman Trading Co.
M/S Karim EnterpriseM/S Karim EnterpriseKarim Enterprise Ltd
Dhaka Fabrics & Co.Dhaka Fabrics & Co.Dhaka Fabrics

The domain name is a separate question. Your licence reading "Rahman Traders" doesn't oblige you to register rahmantraders.com.bd — you can register any available name your business is entitled to use. It's the registrant field that must match.

If you don't have a trade licence

You have real options, and none of them involve waiting indefinitely:

Register a different extension now

.net.bdNot for individualsTech and service businesses
.info.bdNot for individualsContent and information sites
.id.bdNoPersonal and portfolio sites

The direct .bd namespace is the strongest of these. It's shorter than .com.bd, reads as more premium, and an NID is sufficient — see .bd vs .com.bd for the full comparison.

Apply for the licence, register in parallel

A trade licence from your city corporation or union parishad is usually inexpensive and issued within days. If you're going to need one for the business anyway, start that application and register a .bd name in the meantime so nobody else takes it.

Secure the name first

Domain names are first-come, first-served. If your preferred name is available across several extensions, register the one you're eligible for today rather than waiting for a licence to be issued — you can always add .com.bd later.

If your licence is expired

Renew it before you register. A lapsed licence will not be accepted, and submitting one burns your three-day verification window for nothing. If the domain is already registered and the clock is running, contact support — explaining the situation early is better than letting the deadline pass silently.

Renewals and ongoing compliance

Your trade licence has its own renewal cycle, independent of your domain's. Two things to keep in mind:

  • If your business name changes on renewal, update your domain's registrant details to match. A mismatch discovered later is harder to resolve than one corrected proactively.
  • Keep a current scan of the licence in the same place as your domain records, so the next verification takes minutes.

If the business itself is sold or restructured, the domain's registrant needs to change too — see how to change ownership of a .bd domain.

Ready to register

With a valid licence scanned and your registrant name matched, .com.bd registration is a five-minute process. Check whether your name is available, review the full document requirements, or read documents required to register a .bd domain for every registrant type.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register a .com.bd domain without a trade licence?
No. .com.bd is a commercial namespace and BTCL requires a valid trade licence for the registering entity. If you do not have one, register the direct .bd namespace with your NID instead.
My trade licence is still being processed. Can I register now?
You can register and secure the name, but you must upload a valid licence within three days or the domain is suspended. If your licence will take longer, register a .bd or .net.bd name now and add .com.bd once the licence is issued.
Does the trade licence name have to match the domain name?
No. The licence must match the registrant name you enter in the registration form, not the domain itself. You can register any available name your entity is entitled to use.
What if my trade licence has expired?
Renew it with your city corporation or union parishad first. A lapsed licence will not be accepted, and submitting one wastes your three-day window.
Can a sole proprietor register .com.bd?
Yes, provided the sole proprietorship holds a valid trade licence. The licence, not the company structure, is what gets checked.
