Documents Required to Register a .bd Domain (By Registrant Type)

NID, passport, trade licence or EIIN? Exactly what BTCL requires for each extension, the 3-day deadline, and the mistakes that get submissions rejected.

Every .bd domain requires identity verification. That's not a get.bd rule — it's how BTCL runs the national namespace, and it's the main practical difference between registering a .bd and registering a generic .com.

The process is straightforward once you know which document applies to you. What catches people out is the three-day deadline and a handful of avoidable formatting mistakes. This guide covers both.

Key takeaway

Register first, then upload. Your domain is registered and resolving the moment payment clears — but if valid documents aren't submitted within three days, it is suspended and your site goes offline.

Documents by extension

Which document you need depends less on the extension itself than on who you are — but some extensions restrict who can register at all:

  • .bd — open to individuals and organisations. NID or passport is enough for an individual.
  • .com.bd — commercial only. A trade licence is required; an NID alone will be rejected.
  • .net.bd — open to companies, individuals, educational and non-profit registrants.
  • .org.bd — for-profit and non-profit organisations. Registration certificate or trade licence.
  • .edu.bd — educational institutions only. EIIN or UGC approval required.
  • .sch.bd — schools. EIIN certificate.
  • .বাংলা — same eligibility breadth as .net.bd.

The three-day rule

You have three days from registration to submit valid documents. Here's what actually happens on that timeline:

  • Day 0 — you pay, your domain is registered and starts resolving. You can point DNS immediately.
  • Days 0–3 — upload your documents through the client area. Verification typically completes in 24–72 hours on business days.
  • After day 3 with no valid documents — the domain is suspended. It stops resolving; your website and email go down.

Suspension is not deletion

A suspended domain still belongs to you. Submitting valid documents lifts the suspension and the domain resolves again — but the outage in between is real, and for a live business it is expensive. Upload on day 0, not day 3.

Five reasons submissions get rejected

Most rejections are formatting problems, not eligibility problems. In order of frequency:

  1. Name mismatch. The registrant name you typed doesn't match the name on the document. If your trade licence reads "Rahman Traders", register as Rahman Traders — not "Rahman Trading Co."
  2. Cropped or partial scans. The document must be fully visible, all four edges included.
  3. Expired documents. A lapsed trade licence will not pass. Renew it first.
  4. Glare and blur. Phone photos taken at an angle under a light source are the usual culprit. Scan flat, or photograph in even daylight.
  5. Wrong document for the extension. Submitting an NID for a .com.bd is the classic one — that extension needs a trade licence.

Prepare before you buy

Scan your NID and trade licence to PDF before you start the registration. The whole verification step then takes about two minutes, and your three-day window never becomes a problem.

How to submit

  1. Sign in to the get.bd client area.
  2. Open the domain you just registered.
  3. Upload each required file — PDF, JPG or PNG.
  4. Confirm the registrant details match the documents exactly.
  5. Submit. We'll email you as soon as verification is complete.

Renewals and transfers

Verification isn't only a registration step. You'll be asked to confirm documents again when you transfer a .bd domain to a new provider, and if your organisation's details change you should update them proactively rather than waiting for a renewal to surface the mismatch. Changing the registrant entirely is a separate process — see how to change ownership of a .bd domain.

With your documents ready, registration takes minutes. Search for your name, or read the full walkthrough in how to register a .bd domain.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a .com.bd domain?
A valid trade licence in the name of the registering entity, plus the NID of the authorised contact person. The organisation name on the trade licence should match the registrant name you enter.
Can I register a .bd domain with only my NID?
Yes, for the direct .bd namespace and other individual-eligible extensions. Commercial extensions such as .com.bd additionally require a trade licence.
How long do I have to submit documents?
Three days from registration. After that the domain is suspended and stops resolving until verification is completed.
What format should documents be in?
Clear colour scans or photographs in PDF, JPG or PNG. The whole document must be visible, in focus, and readable — no cropped edges, glare, or covered text.
Can a foreigner register a .bd domain?
Not directly. A foreign individual or company needs a local representative in Bangladesh who provides their NID or trade licence and acts as the registrant contact.
