How to Point Your .bd Domain to Your Hosting
Name servers or A records? The exact settings for cPanel, VPS, WordPress, Shopify, Vercel and Netlify — and how to confirm the connection actually worked.
You've registered your .bd domain and you have hosting somewhere. Connecting the two is a five-minute job, but there are two different ways to do it and picking the wrong one leads to the classic symptom: the website works but the email stops.
This guide covers both methods, the exact settings for the platforms Bangladeshi businesses actually use, and how to verify the connection properly.
First, pick your method
There are two ways to connect a domain to hosting, and the choice determines where you manage DNS from then on.
| Change name servers | Add A/CNAME records | |
|---|---|---|
| DNS managed at | Your host | get.bd |
| Setup effort | One change | Two or three records |
| Best when | Website and email are both at that host | Email or other services live elsewhere |
| Propagation | Up to 24–48 hours | Minutes to hours |
| Risk | Existing records are left behind | — |
The email trap
Switching name servers moves DNS authority to your host. Any MX records you had configured at get.bd stop applying, because the new name servers have never heard of them. If your email is with a different provider, either recreate the MX records at your host or use the A-record method instead.
Method 1: change your name servers
Best when your host handles both your website and your email.
- Find your host's name servers — usually in your welcome email or hosting panel, in the form
ns1.yourhost.comandns2.yourhost.com. - Sign in to the get.bd client area and open your domain.
- Choose Name servers and replace the existing entries with your host's pair.
- Save, then add the domain inside your hosting panel so the server knows to serve your site for it.
- Wait for propagation — typically a few hours, up to 48 in the worst case.
Method 2: point with A and CNAME records
Best when you want DNS to stay at get.bd — for instance because your email is with Google Workspace or Zoho while your site is on a VPS.
In the get.bd DNS panel, add:
| Type | Name | Value | TTL |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | @ | Your server's IPv4 address | 3600 |
| CNAME | www | yourdomain.com.bd | 3600 |
Then add the domain in your hosting panel. Your existing MX and TXT records stay exactly as they are.
Platform-specific settings
cPanel shared hosting
Use the name server method — cPanel hosts expect to manage DNS and it keeps their auto-SSL working smoothly. Then add the domain as an addon domain or primary domain inside cPanel.
A VPS or dedicated server
Use A records pointing at the server IP. On the server, configure the virtual host (Apache) or server block (Nginx) for the domain, then issue a certificate with Certbot.
WordPress on managed hosting
Follow your host's instructions — most want name servers. After DNS resolves, update Settings → General in WordPress so both the WordPress Address and Site Address use your .bd domain, otherwise links and redirects will keep pointing at the old address.
Shopify
Add an A record on @ pointing to Shopify's IP, and a CNAME on www pointing to shops.myshopify.com. Then connect the domain from your Shopify admin. Shopify's help centre publishes the current IP — use their value, not one copied from a blog post.
Vercel or Netlify
Both give you an A record value for the root and a CNAME target for www. Add them in the get.bd DNS panel, then verify the domain in the platform dashboard. SSL is issued automatically.
Blogger or a static host
Typically a CNAME on www plus several A records on the root. Follow the platform's list exactly — partial configuration is the usual reason verification fails.
Do not mix methods
Either your host's name servers are authoritative, or get.bd's are. Editing records at get.bd after you've moved name servers to your host does nothing at all — a genuinely common and genuinely confusing waste of an afternoon.
Verifying it worked
Check in this order:
- Does the domain resolve? Run
nslookup yourdomain.com.bd 8.8.8.8and confirm it returns your server's IP. - Does the server answer? Open the domain in a private browsing window. Your host's default page counts as success at the DNS layer.
- Is the right site served? If you see a default or "site not found" page, DNS is fine — add the domain inside your hosting panel.
- Is SSL active? Confirm
https://loads without a warning. Most hosts issue the certificate within minutes of the domain resolving.
When it doesn't work
- Nothing resolves at all. Check the domain isn't suspended for missing documents — see documents required. DNS cannot rescue a suspended domain.
- www works, the root doesn't (or vice versa). One of the two records is missing. You need both.
- The old site still appears. Almost always browser or resolver cache. Try another network before changing anything.
- Email broke after connecting the site. You changed name servers and left the MX records behind. Recreate them at your new DNS host.
